Dental Fillings and Sealants

child at the dentist's office

Dental Fillings

A composite filling is a tooth colored material that is used to repair a tooth affected by chips, decay (cavity), wear, and small cracks.  The decayed or affected area of the tooth is removed and replaced with a composite filling.  Composite fillings are typically placed in one appointment.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants add an extra layer of protection in addition to brushing and flossing, by keeping plaque out of  grooves that are hard to reach with a toothbrush. Dental sealants help keep cavities from forming by making brushing easier.

Dental sealants are usually placed after permanent teeth have erupted in children. Adults can benefit from sealants as well, when they are placed on healthy teeth.
